About Jun Akiyama, Somatic Psychotherapist for Tech Professionals

WHERE THIS ALL COMES FROM

Silhouette of a person climbing a grassy hill during sunset or sunrise.

I spent decades as a software developer before becoming a therapist, so I know viscerally what the tech world asks of you: never being fully off the clock, the isolation of working async, the sense that rest has to be earned.

My own path out of that wasn't more strategy or better time management. It came from learning to listen to my body where the toll had slowly been accumulating. That same realization eventually became the foundation of my broader practice, Shin Shin Wellness, where I work with a wider range of clients on these same issues.

There’s a difference between pushing through and moving through.

WHO I WORK WITH

Developers, engineers, and the tech leads who manage them

Anyone whose nervous system treats every problem like an incident

High-achievers who don’t feel as fine as they look

People newer to tech, still finding where they fit

Your Slack status says “active".
Your body says otherwise.

HOW I WORK

Watercolor painting of person breathing with a background with soft blended colors of white, gray, orange, and blue.

I studied somatic psychotherapy because talk alone wasn't shifting what I was actually carrying. Your body already knows what's wrong and what would help; it's just rarely asked. My job is to help you learn to recognize, hear, and trust your body.

We’ll pay attention to what’s happening in your body right now, alongside all the stories in your mind. That's usually where the answers and the profound change are waiting.

This kind of work can help you:

Feel what's actually happening in your body

Reach what words alone can't get to

Connect more honestly with yourself and work through relational strain

Unify mind, body, and heart

Ease the weight of stress, anxiety, and inner conflict

Relational Dialogue

Talking through and processing, grounded in what’s happening in the room and your body.

Movement and Sensations

Noticing what the body is doing and saying, then letting movements arise

Breathwork

Regulating the nervous system through the breath, in real time

Dance/Movement Therapy

Harnessing creative movement expression as a therapeutic language.
